Baltimore Families Face Heating Crisis as Gas Bills Triple

Baltimore residents are facing an energy affordability crisis as gas bills surge unexpectedly this winter. Many households report bills jumping from $200-$300 to over $500-$700 in a single month, despite energy-efficient upgrades.

The culprit isn't just winter heating demand. BGE's gas distribution charge has nearly quadrupled over 15 years—from 26 cents per therm in 2010 to 97 cents by February 2026. Three rate increases between January and March 2026 mean distribution charges are now nearly double the actual cost of gas consumed.

BGE attributes the increases to replacing aging pipelines. While some infrastructure improvements are necessary, Maryland's People's Counsel warns the pace far outstrips inflation.

In an attempt to reduce costs, some residents are lowering their thermostats—sometimes as low as 58 degrees at night—but the impact extends far beyond discomfort. As resident Donna Ann Ward observed, "I have neighbors who are making the adjustment in what else they're spending money on. They are cutting back at the grocery store, they are delaying purchasing medication, they are asking for help for things like diapers and formula."

A relief fund offering $250-$500 received 15,000 applications on its first day and closed within 48 hours, underscoring the crisis facing working families across Baltimore.
